The truing stand

On the truing stand and the wheel: the slowest job in the workshop, the feeler gauge's patience, and why a true wheel is the shop's signature.

Of all the jobs a workshop does, wheel truing is the one that looks least like work. A wheel spins slowly in a frame of calipers, a mechanic watches the rim pass a feeler, and nothing appears to happen for a very long time. The truing stand is the workshop's meditation device, and the wheel that leaves it round is the quietest proof that somebody in the back room cared.

The slowest job in the shop

A puncture takes five minutes and a gear adjustment takes ten, but a badly buckled wheel can hold a mechanic for an hour of millimetre corrections. The work has no shortcut because the wheel is a system: every spoke pulls on every other, and a correction on the left side borrows tension from the right. The stand exists to make that argument visible. Its feelers turn a thousandth of an inch into something you can watch, which is the workshop's whole trick in miniature.

What the feeler hears

Experienced mechanics trued by ear before they trued by eye. The feeler set a fraction off the rim, the wheel spun, and the scrape told you where the bend lived. Close the gap a quarter turn at a time and the scrape migrates, shortens, goes quiet. The stand's discipline was the discipline of small turns: a quarter turn of a spoke wrench, never more, because the rim remembers every impatience. The wheel taught the mechanic, and the mechanic taught the apprentice, and the stand held the lesson still enough to learn.

Round, true and dished

The notebook keeps the three words separate because the shop kept them separate. Round is vertical: the rim's distance from the hub, the hop you feel under braking. True is lateral: the rim's side-to-side weave, the wobble that catches the brake blocks. Dish is centredness: the rim's position between the locknuts, the wheel's fairness to the frame. A stand could show all three, and a good mechanic chased them in that order, roundness first because it forgives least.

The wheel as the shop's signature

A shop's reputation rode on wheels more than on any other repair because a wheel is honest. A badly adjusted gear hides for a day; a badly trued wheel announces itself at the first brake squeeze. The shops that built wheels by hand, spokes counted and laced and tensioned across an afternoon, were making the claim that the workshop could manufacture, not merely mend. The old shop kept that capability on its board, and the stand was where the claim was proved.

What the stand replaced and kept

Before the stand, wheels were trued in the frame, brake blocks as feelers, the bicycle itself as the jig. The stand freed the wheel from the frame and the job from the bicycle, and that freedom changed the economics: a wheel could be trued while the bike stayed at home. What the stand kept from the older method was the ear. The best mechanics still listened to the feeler, because the scrape carries information the eye reads slower.

Why it stays on the rail

The truing stand belongs in this notebook because it embodies the workshop's deepest habit: the willingness to pursue an invisible perfection. Nobody compliments a true wheel; they only notice its absence. The stand exists for work whose success is silence, and a culture that can sustain such work, hour after hour, quarter turn after quarter turn, is worth the keeping.
